Bearings - Response Systems - Light-Ups - Surface Change - Hybrid Yo-yos

These mods actually entail taking some or all of the yo-yo apart and making physical changes to the yo-yo itself. If you have a mod that you would like to post here, please email me at tim@themodsquad.org

NOTE: Most of these mods are potentially perilous to your yo-yos or you if they are not done properly or tools are handled incorrectly. This website and the modders featured herein are in no way responsible for any damages done to your yo-yos or yourselves as a result of attempting any modifications found on this site - whether it is a sloppily painted yoyo, a cracked yo-yo body from acetone, or a missing finger from a crazy dremel accident. When modding yo-yos, always proceed with caution!

Bearings

There are several ways of changing bearing systems - SPR kits, Konkave Kits, hole widening/recession, and full bearingization.

SPR kits
SPR spacers are designed to directly fit into certain yo-yos, eliminating the need for actually physically modding the yo-yo. The Mod Squad goes one step further, and recesses these into the body of the yo-yo and also fits them into yo-yos they were not originally intended for.

Hole widening
In certain yo-yos, it is possible using power tools to carve away a little bit of the inside wall to allow more room for a 1/2 inch bearing. This can be done on old small-bearing YYJ models as well as Duncan yo-yos (in conjunction with a Dif-E-Yo Konkave spacer). Also, many yo-yos can be widened a teeny bit to allow standard Duncan bearings to fit.

Bearingization
Bearingization is when you take a non-bearing yo-yo (fixed-axle old-school) and add a bearing to it. These are very difficult mods, and many are very Frankensteinian in their mix-and-match of parts. Bearingization is a specialty of TheModSquad.org

Response Systems

Recessed Sticker Mod
Takeshi is the creator of this mod. This mod requires a lathe (and skill). Moving the sticker below the surface wall makes the yo-yo far less responsive.

O-ring Mod
YYJ uses o-rings as a response system in many of their yo-yos. Using a lathe, it is possible to carve a groove around the bearing in any yo-yo in order to press in an o-ring. 1/2" bearings can use a standard YYJ o-ring, themodsquad.org uses other sized o-rings for other sized bearings.

Silicone Mod
The recessed silicone mod works the same as a recessed sticker. The difference being that it uses silicone that is poured into the recession instead of being held in place by adhesive. The recession for silicone is deeper than a recession for a sticker. This is to give the silicone more surface area on the walls of the recession for the silicone to hold onto. Also, it allows more silicone to be used and will last longer. "Will last longer." not forever. Silicone will eventually wear down (but it does take a long long long time.)

We use 100% Silicone Sealant for aquarium tanks. Just ask the people where you can find silicone sealants for kitchens and bathrooms or for aquarium tank sealant. Once you get the stuff, use a paper clip, tack, nail or whatever to scrape out all the remaining silicone in your yoyo. Squirt the silicone into the recession and lightly rub your finger over it to push the silicone all they way to the bottom and rub the access off with your finger.  If there is a thin layer of residue after applying, don't worry. Rub that garbage off after it dries. To ensure that the silicone dries, I recommend leaving it sit for at least 24 hours. Check the tube for dry time. 24 hours is a good rule of thumb though.

Light-up

There are several ways to light up a yo-yo, most of which involve stealing the "guts" from one light-up yo-yo and installing them in another.

Surface

Surface alteration is relatively new to the yo-yo mod world, probably due to the difficulty in production. Surface alterations can be made for playability, durability, or simply cosmetic purposes. The Mod Squad currently does not offer any of these services.

Powder Coating
Powder coating is a highly involved process which can be used on metal. In short, you won't be trying this at home. In powder coating, the powdered paint may be applied by either of two techniques: The item is lowered into a fluidised bed of the powder, which may or may not be electrostatically charged, or the powdered paint is electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the part. The part is then placed in an oven and the powder particles melt and coalesce to form a continuous film.

Anodization
Essentially, anodizing involves immersing aluminum in a bath of sulfuric acid, called an electrolyte, and running a low-voltage electric current through the acid solution. The result of normal anodizing is a thin coating of aluminum oxide (rust) on the surface of the original aluminum sheet. It is used to protect aluminum from abrasion and corrosion and to allow it to be dyed in a wide range of colors. The process derives its name from the fact that the part to be treated forms the anode portion of an electrical circuit in this electrolytic process.

You won't be trying this one at home either. ;)

Satinizing
Some yo-yos become more slippery when the surface is "satinized". THIS IS POTENTIALLY A PERILOUS MOD. BEWARE. It also depends on what type of plastic was used to make the yo-yo!

Hybrid Yo-yos

A very tricky process - two completely different yo-yos can have their parts blended together to make a new creation. Sometimes it is done to add weight, and sometimes it is done to change the physical characteristics (rims or sidecaps) of the yo-yo.

What's New

2008

I am the busiest man on the planet. As such, I have greatly reduced my yo-yoing activities.

Currently I plan on producing 1 or 2 yo-yos per week and selling them on ebay.

I should have the home page redone for 2008 by June 1st.

"It was worth the wait. I really enjoy the yo-yo you modified for me. It is a pleasure to play."
